Four people saved by fire alarms By Jean Tilley Mid Devon Star - Taunton, England, UK

FOLLOWING an incident in Exeter, in which four people were saved by a fire alarm, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is reminding everyone of the importance of not only of having alarms fitted but also to correctly maintain and test the equipment.

Bill Harvison, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service fire investigator, said: "Just having fire alarms fitted is not enough, they must be regularly maintained and tested weekly.

"In rented properties it is the responsibility of the owner or other person responsible for the building to ensure that the equipment is properly tested and maintained - however everyone else should also be aware of the need to check that everything is in working order.

"There is no doubt that having a working fire alarm system in this property contributed to the fact that all persons were able to exit the building suffering no more than smoke inhalation and minor injuries".
