SUDANESE
woman Ayak Mawien managed to escape her burning home after being
alerted by a smoke detector.
The fire
started in a bedroom of her Lauder Ave, Sefton Park, home just after
9am yesterday.
Ms
Mawien was alerted by the smoke detector alarm and escaped before
the fire took hold.
Metropolitan Fire Service spokesman John Foody said by the time
firefighters arrived the house was well alight.
"The
fire had taken hold and flames were coming out through the front
window when firefighters arrived," he said. The fire quickly was
contained but caused more than $100,000 damage.
Ms
Mawien was comforted by neighbours as she watched fire crews
extinguish the blaze.
Flames
were contained to the front bedroom but smoke caused extensive
damage.
Mr.
Foody said: "A working smoke alarm alerted her to the fire . . .
Working smoke alarms save lives."
