Inspections & Surveys - Hand Operated Fire-fighting Equipment.

Why do they need to be inspected?

Portable fire extinguishers need to be inspected to ensure that the extinguisher is ready for immediate use in case of fire, this is done by a complete visual inspection of the cylinder and discharge tube and gauge (if fitted). The cylinders are then weighed to ensure Total gross weight is within set tolerance. It is also important to ensure that each fire extinguisher has the correct label on it and that we can read all instructions on the correct way to use of this equipment.

When are they inspected?

All portable fire equipment located on commercial and professional premises require be under-go a annual inspection. However the surrounding environment must be considered when setting out a maintenance schedule. In a hash or aggressive environment it would be advisable to complete monthly inspections.

There is also at times other NZS that may affect the maintenance of some types of extinguishers due to the cylinder that was used in its manufactured, We strongly recommend that if there is any doubt about the last time of inspection ,  you contact a fire protection specialist company.

Who is to do the inspection?

To ensure that your fire equipment is maintained to the required level and that your company have the correct type of fire protection . use only a fire company that has trained staff that has completed  the national certificate in hand held fire equipment level 3. There is also a need for fire company staff to have completed the approved course to become a approved filler of fire extinguishers.
