Placement of
extinguishers
Fire
Extinguishers should be placed near to where they will be used
and/or and exit points. Do not place them where getting them
will place the potential operator in danger.
Fire Extinguishers must be located in
conspicuous, readily accessible and suitably marked positions.
They are located in normal paths of travel and near exit
points.
Maintenance
Fire
Extinguishers require regular maintenance. You should check your
Fire Extinguisher regularly to see if it is still there, not
damaged and that the gauge is in the operable range - usually a
green area on the face of the gauge. Fire Extinguishers also
require an annual check by a Fire Protection company. Every
five years an extinguisher requires a pressure test; this can
only be done at authorised Test Stations.
Note: Fire extinguishers must be pressure
tested at intervals stated under part 7 regulation 52 of the
Hazardous Substance compressed gas regulations.
Operation
Read the
instructions on the Fire Extinguisher label as they will vary
between different models. Decide whether you should be fighting
the fire at all - remember if in doubt, get out and call the
Fire Service (111).
Training
Training and
practice in using Fire Extinguishers is important as it is
estimated that 98% of people have never used a Fire Extinguisher
- wouldn't you like to know how - you might need it one day.
